The Way of the Sun: A Total Solar Eclipse Retreat in Egypt

27th July – 5th August 2027

We are inviting a small group to join us for a nine-night journey through Egypt, culminating in the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027. Beginning among the ancient pyramids and temples of Cairo, we will travel west into the Sahara to Siwa Oasis, where the Moon will pass across the face of the Sun, bringing darkness into the middle of the day. This is one of the longest total solar eclipses of the century, offering an extraordinary opportunity to witness the relationship between the Sun, Moon and Earth.

The Way of the Sun brings together ancient Egyptian understandings of the Sun, our relationship with the natural world and practices that support inner exploration. Through Transpersonal Yoga, Qi Gong, meditation and time spent in the desert, we will explore the rhythms of light and darkness, movement and stillness, with space for rest and integration. At the heart of this journey is an invitation to deepen our relationship with the Sun – the source of life that sustains us all.

Our Home in Siwa

Our home in Siwa is a small farm on the edge of the Western Desert, surrounded by olive, date and fruit trees. Developed over many years, it reflects a deep relationship with the land and a commitment to living in harmony with the natural environment.

The buildings have been carefully designed and constructed using traditional local materials, with particular attention given to conserving water and energy. This is not a purpose-built retreat centre, but a home that has gradually opened its doors to small groups seeking time for reflection, learning and personal development.

With comfortable, simple accommodation, a dedicated practice space, a freshwater reservoir for swimming and a natural water hammam, it offers a welcoming environment in which to rest and spend time together.

Climate and Accommodation

August is one of the hottest months in Egypt, with daytime temperatures in Siwa often exceeding 40°C. The buildings are constructed using traditional local materials, including kershef, which helps moderate indoor temperatures. There is no air conditioning, so it is important that you are comfortable spending time in a very hot climate.

Our days will follow the rhythm of the Sun, with practices during the cooler mornings and evenings and afternoons largely reserved for rest, swimming and reflection. Loose, lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs is culturally sensitive and recommended for protection from the Sun and comfort in the desert.

Meals are prepared using local ingredients, and Wi-Fi is limited. The farm has solar power, a dedicated dojo for our practices and the support of local Siwan people whose longstanding relationship with the family and land is an important part of the experience

The Sun has travelled with us since the beginning, its light sustaining all life upon the Earth. For a moment, darkness meets the day, and in the stillness, something unseen is revealed.

The Retreat Experience

The Way of the Sun brings together the ancient landscapes of Egypt, our relationship with the Sun and practices that support inner exploration. Beginning with the pyramids of Saqqara and Giza, we travel west into the desert to Siwa Oasis, where we will gather to witness the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027.

Our time in Siwa will follow a gentle rhythm of sunrise and sunset practices, Transpersonal Yoga, Qi Gong, meditation and Yoga Nidra. There will be opportunities to explore the land, swim, rest and spend time beneath the desert stars.

The programme is intentionally spacious, allowing time for personal reflection and integration. The following is an outline of our journey rather than a fixed timetable.

27 July – Arrival in Cairo

Arrive in Cairo and transfer to our accommodation. The evening is free to settle in, rest and prepare for the journey ahead.

28 July – Saqqara: The Beginnings

Our first guided visit takes us to Saqqara, home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, one of the earliest monumental stone structures in Egypt. We begin our exploration of ancient Egyptian understandings of creation, the Sun and the journey of life.

29 July – Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum

We visit the Giza Plateau, including the Great Pyramid and Sphinx, followed by the Grand Egyptian Museum. Our time here offers an opportunity to encounter the extraordinary architecture, history and spiritual traditions of ancient Egypt.

30 July – Journey to Siwa Oasis

We leave Cairo and travel west across the desert to Siwa Oasis. On arrival, there will be time to settle into our home, explore the surroundings and rest after the journey.

31 July – Arriving in the Land

Our first full day in Siwa is an opportunity to become familiar with the land and the rhythm of the retreat. Gentle morning practice, time for swimming, rest and an evening gathering will help us settle into our time together.

1 August – Preparing for the Eclipse

Through movement, meditation and quiet reflection, we begin preparing for the following day’s eclipse. There will be time for personal practice and rest, with the possibility of gathering beneath the desert stars in the evening.

2 August – The Total Solar Eclipse

At the heart of our retreat is the total solar eclipse, when the Moon passes across the Sun and daylight briefly gives way to darkness.

We will gather to witness this extraordinary event, allowing time both before and afterwards for quiet reflection and integration. The remainder of the day will be kept spacious.

3 August – Rest and Integration

A gentle day following the eclipse, with opportunities for Yoga Nidra, movement, swimming and personal reflection. There will be no expectation to fill the day with activities.

4 August – The Returning Light

Our final full day in Siwa offers time to bring together the experiences of the journey. Sunrise practice, quiet reflection and a closing gathering will mark the completion of our retreat.

5 August – Return to Cairo

After breakfast, private transport will take participants back to Cairo for their onward journeys. Please allow sufficient time for the road transfer when arranging return flights.

Between Heaven and Earth

Siwa Oasis lies in a depression below sea level, surrounded by Egypt’s Western Desert. Here, palm groves, salt lakes and natural springs meet the open sands of the Great Sand Sea. With vast horizons and little artificial light, the desert sky can feel remarkably close to the Earth.

Our home has been created with a deep respect for this landscape. At its heart is a dojo, designed to express the meeting of heaven and Earth, with masculine and feminine principles reflected in its architecture. This is where we will gather for our shared practices.

Beyond the dojo, the oasis offers opportunities to experience its natural waters, explore the surrounding landscape and spend time in the desert. The simplicity and stillness of this environment are an important part of our retreat.

The Way of the Sun - A Personal Journey

My relationship with the Sun has been central to my life and ceremonial practice for over 22 years. During this time, it has informed my understanding of consciousness, our relationship with the Earth and the ways in which we experience the sacred in everyday life.

The Way of the Sun is something I will be sharing for the first time in 2027. It brings together this longstanding relationship with the Sun, my years of exploring Egypt’s ancient sites and my connection with Siwa Oasis.

The total solar eclipse offers a remarkable moment to begin this journey together. Rather than creating something around an event, this retreat is an opportunity to share work that has been developing through my own life and practice for many years.
